The Division of Orthopedic Oncology basically deals with treatments in “any body parts associated with body movements,” which include bones, joints, muscles and nerves. It is not rare that backache and pains in neck, knee and hip joint originate in tumors there, regardless of whether they are benign or malignant. We provide diagnoses and treatments for malignant tumors (sarcomas) and benign tumors in bones and soft tissues (any soft tissues other than inner organs, i.e., muscle, nerve, blood vessel, fat tissue, etc.). Also, when cancers originated in various organs metastasize in bones (bone metastases), the treatments will be provided at this division.
Although sarcoma is a rare disease and is often referred to as an orphan cancer, it is characterized by the facts that many of the patients tend to be young or pediatric and that it can be detected in various body regions. At the same time, treatments for sarcomas can be very complicated because of such pathological diversity as osteosarcoma, liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma and synovial sarcoma. At this division, the doctors are all specializing in treating sarcomas, having experienced in a variety of cases. When a patient is a child, we work together with the Division of Pediatrics for the treatment.
Cancers treated at the Division of Orthopedic Oncology often require multimodality therapies involving chemotherapy, radiation therapy and rehabilitation, not limited to operations. Therapeutic plans are always customized for each patient with lots of attentions paid not to deteriorate life functions, while complete cures are given the priority and therefore aimed at. Based on this concept, therapeutic plans are carried out in collaboration with other clinical divisions.
Even when a surgery can’t be chosen because of the location, the size or the condition of sarcoma, a complete cure will be always aimed at working together with the Radiation and Proton Therapy Center. The SCC is one of a few medical institutions equipped with proton beam facilities in Japan.
Some cancer hospitals do not take care of benign tumor treatments. However, at the Division of Orthopedic Oncology at the SCC, whenever it is decided that a surgery is the choice of therapy, we will not hesitate to perform one even for a benign tumor.
Lately, there have been more and more cases of bone metastases of cancers originated in various other organs. A bone metastasis often triggers severe pains or fractures, which will result in lowered quality of life of the patient. Therefore, we are willing to treat bone metastases at this division. When a bone metastasis is suspected, the case will be referred to this division in order to decide on the best therapeutic plan. If the best choice is a surgery, it will be performed at this division, while we also collaborate with other clinical departments including the Division of Radiation Therapy where radiation therapy is provided and the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine where physical rehabilitation is coordinated and provided.
