Features of Anesthesiology

One of the missions of the Division of Anesthesiology is the anesthesia management for surgery. The anesthesiologist controls aching pains during the surgery so that the patient will not feel them and will be protected from physical stresses. At the same time, the anesthesiologist monitors the patient’s blood pressure, pulse and urine output in order to keep “circulation” and “respiration” under control. This will ensure the patient’s general condition to be maintained at the favorable levels during and after the surgery.

Features and Therapeutic Strategies of the Division at the SCC

At the Shizuoka Cancer Center Hospital, 3,753 surgeries a year (as of 2021) are performed with general anesthesia controlled by the Division of Anesthesiology under the policy of “the safety first.”

We always have a meeting with the patient before the surgery, which will help him/her feel at ease about getting anesthesia.

Keeping patients’ safety is the most important mission of anesthesiologists. In order to accomplish it, anesthesiologist needs to learn about the general conditions of the patients thoroughly. At this division, an anesthesiologist unexceptionally has a meeting with the patient before the surgery for initial evaluation of his/her conditions and detailed explanation about anesthesia. An optimal anesthesia plan is made after fully understanding each patient’s general conditions and problems, but when it is decided that the case carries too much risk, the surgery can be postponed and additional examinations will be suggested upon agreement with the surgeon.

A Word from the Division Staff

Everyone will feel worried and uneasy about the surgery. An anesthesiologist will stay by your side in the operating room, watching over your general condition all the while during the surgery. We offer our expertise and well-trained techniques to create the best surgical environment and the safety in the operating room. Whenever you have inquiries or feel anxious about anesthesia, please do not hesitate to come to us and ask even if it’s either before or after the initial meeting.
