“Endoscope” is a very fine tubular medical device with a built-in microcamera (please refer to the photo above). It is inserted into the digestive system for monitoring the internal surface, and for determining the diagnosis. It is also used for a procedure or a treatment by resecting the region with a resecting device attached to the front edge. Endoscope inserted from either mouth or nose into upper gastrointestinal tract including laryngopharynx, esophagus, stomach and duodenum, is commonly called “a gastric camera,” while the one inserted from anus into lower gastrointestinal tract including small intestine, large intestine, colon and rectum is called “a colonoscope.” Moreover, endoscope is used for obtaining images of organs outside of gastrointestinal tract, including bile duct and pancreas, for diagnoses and treatments. At the Division of Endoscopy, all the procedures performed with the endoscopes are being provided.
Endoscopic examination is not only useful for a case required to determine “whether it is a cancer or not,” but also for a case already having been diagnosed so. It will help examine on how deep the tumor is located and how wide it is spreading, and will eventually help make an optimal therapeutic plan.
What is being provided as treatments via endoscopy includes resections of polyps and early-staged cancers in gastrointestinal tract, and in the biliary and pancreatic field, bile excretion for biliary stricture, and gallstone removal, etc. The procedures won’t give patients physical impacts as heavily as surgeries, and at the same time, they can be done aiming at complete cures of cancers.
The Division of Endoscopy at the SCC has a good track record of cancer diagnoses and treatments by endoscopy. The number of endoscopic resections of gastric cancer here is always ranked among the top three in Japan, and the numbers of endoscopic resections in the esophagus and the large intestine, as well as the number of endoscopic procedures in the biliary and pancreatic field, are also ranked quite high. Based on ample experiences, we make diagnostic decisions and optimal therapeutic plans for safe and secure endoscopic treatments. That way, we keep on building up fine track record in this field of medicine.
We are willing to participate in clinical tests for assuring diagnostic or therapeutic methods that haven’t gained a positive consensus in Japan yet. We are engaged in clinical tests in collaboration with other medical institutions nationwide, including a study conducted by JCOG (the Japan Clinical Oncology Group), in addition to our own single-institution studies.
