At the Division of Gynecology, all kinds of cancers in female genitals (female organs of reproduction) are diagnosed and treated. They include uterine cervical cancer, which is common among women from 20’s to 40’s, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, vaginal cancer, vulva cancer and choriocarcinoma. Basically, the therapies provided for gynecological cancers are either the choice from or the combination of three standard cancer treatments, i.e., surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy (drug treatment). At this division, cancer therapies other than radiation therapy are being provided
At the Division of Gynecology at the SCC, the number of gynecological cancer treatment cases is one of the biggest in Japan, which proves ample experiences for surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy in this field. The rich experiences ensure optimal choices of treatment, safe radical surgeries, well-suited chemotherapies and side effect controls, which are all being done on a daily basis. We have had very positive outcomes from these treatments.
Patients are treated with the “standard cancer treatments” indicated in the “EBM (evidence-based medicine)” including medical guide lines suggested by the Japan Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) in the USA. They stand for the cancer treatments currently evaluated as the most effective.
Although what we basically offer is “standard cancer treatments” which are evaluated as the most effective at this moment, what our patients expect for their cancer treatments can vary depending on their senses of value and the circumstances surrounding them. For example, some of them may want us to “make it a priority to leave as many organs as possible, even if it means not to remove cancer completely,” or “give up any treatments which can be physically hard and let the life be quiet and relaxing” while others may want to “challenge any possible cancer treatments, even if the circumstances don’t look quite optimistic.” We always try to listen to each patient to see what she really feels about her cancer treatment, and discuss with all the staff involving not only the colleagues at this division but also the Radiation Therapy Center and the Division of Pathology until we reach the best therapy choice. In addition, we always try to offer the latest and the most accurate information so that our patients can make the best choices for “convincing cancer therapy.”
“Laparoscopic surgery” is a surgical procedure with a camera and surgical tools inserted through tiny holes made in the abdomen. It has been widely recognized as a far less invasive operation than conventional laparotomy. At this division, the surgeons with certified skills for laparoscopic surgery perform the procedure when indications are proven as applicable.
At most hospitals in general, they might give up surgeries when cancers are found as invading surrounding organs or metastatic. However, even for such cases, we look into the possibilities for extended operations in the first place including but not limited to the gynecological organs, always pursuing complete resections of all cancer lesions. When it is decided that an exte
nded operation is possible and there is an advantage for it, we will perform it collaborating with the surgeons from other relevant clinical departments.
We aim at development and establishment of new cancer therapies. Therefore, we participate in many clinical trials organized by such study groups as the Japan Clinical Oncology Group (JCOG), the Japan Gynecologic Oncology Group (JGOG) and the Kansai Clinical Oncology Group (KCOG), and make positive commitments for developing new cancer drugs.
We believe that it is one big mission for a cancer hospital to practice “a convincing cancer therapy in which a patient herself feels sufficient and content,” by employing various treatments skillfully. However, there can be side effects and complications for every cancer treatment, and it is necessary to discuss thoroughly with a patient before deciding on the therapeutic strategy. Therefore, we try to be fairly open with our patient about what is going on with the disease, as it is essential to share accurate information among the medical staff, the patient and her family for the discussion. A second opinion often helps a great deal in order to obtain “a convincing cancer therapy.” We would like the patients to feel free to be referred to the SCC from other medical institutions, or the other way around, for gaining second opinions.
