This is a new clinical division launched in April, 2024. It specializes in early clinical development for anti-malignant tumor drugs. The phase I clinical trial is the very first step for a clinical development of a new anti-cancer drug. That’s when safety as well as efficacy of the drug are evaluated, and optimal dose and administration method are studied and discussed. At this early stage of the clinical development, the subject is often targeted to a wide range of malignant tumors, rather than a specific type of tumor or an organ, which makes it more sensible to have a cross-organ research system than otherwise. In addition, as a newly-developed anti-cancer drug has an action mechanism different from conventional anti-cancer drugs, side effect management will also be beyond the scope of conventional ones. At the SCC, we have already had interprofessional collaborations among doctors and nurses at various clinical divisions, pharmacists, clinical test coordinators, etc. for the early clinical developments including the phase I clinical trials. However, now that the Division of Early Clinical Development has been established, a ward dedicated for the treatment management is prepared, the medical staff equipped with expertism and ample experiences in the field is stationed there, and the developments are being carried out much safer and faster than before.
In recent years, cancer genome profiling analysis has been clinically introduced, and new therapies focusing on specific gene abnormalities have been prominently developed ever since. At the same time, the cases where the efficacies of those therapies are proven at the early stages of clinical developments have been increasing. This division works closely together with the Genomic Medicine Support Office to promote early clinical development of an effective new anti-cancer drug based on the results of cancer genome profiling analyses, aiming at the benefits of cancer patients by delivering it as fast as possible.
