Features of Breast Surgery

In Japan, the number of newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients has been increasing each year. Among cancers for women in Japan, breast cancer is now the most common. Unlike cancers in other body regions, of which the risk becomes bigger in step with age, this particular disease becomes more and more common in 30’s, achieves a peak during the age period between late 40’s and early 50’s, and then it becomes less common after that. It is one of the cancers which women should be especially cautious about, but complete cure can be expected when it is detected early enough and optimal therapies are provided. The therapies, including operation (surgical treatment), chemotherapy with anti-cancer drugs and/or hormone drugs, and radiation therapy, are chosen and tailored, or combined, depending on the symptomatic states of each patient. Among them, operations are performed at the Division of Breast Surgery.

Features and Therapeutic Strategies of the Division at the SCC

Specialists of diagnostic images provide precise diagnoses.

The choice of optimal cancer treatment starts with a precise diagnosis. At the Shizuoka Cancer Center, the latest, cutting-edge diagnostic image equipment has been installed and highly-skilled specialists for image diagnosis for breast collaborate with pathologists, so that even higher precision can be expected for diagnoses.

The best choice for a therapeutic strategy is always pursued by way of collaborations with other clinical departments including the Division of Breast Oncology, where chemotherapy is handled.

Therapeutic strategies for breast cancer vary depending on the disease progressions. At the SCC, operations (surgical treatments) are performed at the Division of Breast Surgery for the early stages (or partially-advanced stages), while chemotherapy with anti-cancer drugs and/or hormone drugs for advanced stages is provided at the Division of Breast Oncology. A team called the “Breast Disease Group” has been organized by the Breast Oncology Center involving these clinical departments as well as the “Division of Diagnostic Radiology” for patients who are not diagnosed as having breast cancers yet. Specialists with various backgrounds in the Breast Disease Group work together to discuss on each case, and bring about the optimal therapy plan for each patient.

Breast reconstruction can be done systematically and smoothly with the benefit of the help from the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Efforts are always made for breast-conservation with the surgeries. However, there are cases when breasts need to be removed completely because of the cancer progressions. In recent years, breast reconstruction techniques have proven significant progress and there are various methods to choose from. The Division of Breast Surgery starts collaborating with the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery even before the operation itself, and work together with them through the course of surgical treatment, in order to plan on the systematic removal and reconstruction of the breast. The involvement of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers tremendous moral supports to patients losing breasts for cancer therapy.

We participate in trials for developing new cancer therapies always willingly.

There have been many new cancer therapies developed lately, including the one based on genetic studies, which have led great improvements in treatment results. Among them, newly-developed anti-cancer drugs have shown significant improvements, and they are now often used in conjunction with surgeries. At the Division of Breast Surgery, as well as the Division of Breast Oncology where chemotherapy is provided, participation in clinical studies for new cancer therapies and new drugs is being highly promoted.

A Word from the Division Staff

Breast cancer is one of the cancers which can be cured completely when they are detected at early stages. At the same time, it should be noted that this is a type of cancer which you can find it out yourself. If you notice (or you feel that you do) a lump in the breast or in the armpit, feel a pain in the breast, have ooze from the nipple, or just worry about the symptoms in these areas, please do not hesitate to visit us.
