In general, gastroenterological medicine covers widely-spread organs for digestion starting from head-and-neck region, where food comes in and is swallowed down, to esophagus, stomach, gallbladder, bile duct, pancreas, colon and rectum. The Division of Gastrointestinal Oncology at a cancer hospital handles anti-cancer drug therapy (chemotherapy) for malignant tumors arising in these organs. As anti-cancer drugs vary depending on which digestive organ they target for, cancer treatments with them must be provided by specialists with ample expertise and experiences. Needless to mention drug therapies for unresectable or recurrent cancers, various therapies, such as adjuvant chemotherapy before or after surgery provided for complete cure as well as concurrent chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy, are also being provided here. Furthermore, any medical procedures including supportive therapy for relieving side effects from anti-cancer drugs and palliative care for various cancer symptoms are all provided at this division.
At the Division of Gastrointestinal Oncology, all the doctors are the “medical oncologists” who are the experts of drug therapies for cancers. Based on their ample expertise and experiences about anti-cancer drugs, they are to provide optimal cancer treatment customized for each patient.
What is being provided here is a drug therapy for cancer in accordance with the “standard cancer treatment.“ The standard cancer treatment is supposed to be the best for a patient, currently proven with scientific evidence and assessed as the most effective.
Side effects from anti-cancer drugs vary depending on each case, and such factors as the drug type and the dose, as well as the patient’s age and weight, will define how often the symptoms will appear or how serious they can be. Keeping side effects skillfully under control is absolutely necessary for continuing an anti-cancer drug therapy. For a side effect expected to appear frequently, preventive measures are taken beforehand. Likewise, timing, frequency and seriousness of side effects for each patient are always carefully assessed to provide optimal care. In recent years, a bigger variety of adverse events than before have been derived by newly-developed drugs, including such difficult cases as skin disorders, problems in the eyes, oral ulcer, and hypertension. For those difficult cases, a multidisciplinary team with various specialists, pharmacists and certified nurses for chemotherapy involving the Divisions of Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Cardiology, will be in charge to take care of them.
Progress of anti-cancer drugs is never suspended. Therefore, we try not only absorbing the latest knowledge and information, but also aiming at development and establishment of a new cancer treatment by widely participating in both domestic and international multicenter clinical studies as well as clinical trials for new drugs developed by pharmaceuticals.
It is often the case that an anti-cancer drug is taken with some negative impressions only. For example, they say that “it’s coming with a severe adverse event” or “it won’t work well enough.” Indeed, a cancer can’t be completely cured by an anti-cancer drug treatment alone except some particular cases, and a patient is often expected to live together with the disease. It is our goal to let a patient live a happy life with it as long as possible. Also, it is true that an anti-cancer drug therapy often induces side effects and adverse events, but they can be controlled when the treatments provided are good enough. Furthermore, an anti-cancer drug therapy can be effective for lessening unbearable symptoms of cancer itself. As we are always ready to accept any inquiries about anti-cancer drug therapies, please do not hesitate to come to the doctors and the nurses here, whenever you go through pains or difficult time during your cancer treatment.
