In general, a cancer originates in a certain organ, and spreads to other organs as it progresses. Even when it metastasizes, it is considered that it takes on the characteristics of the primary tumor and the treatment method will be tailored in accordance with it. However, there is a case sometimes that only the metastasized tumor is detected when it is diagnosed, and even with various examinations, the primary tumor may remain unknown. In a case as such, it is called “cancer of unknown primary” and the Division of Clinical Oncology will be responsible for the treatment of that type of cancer.
Cancer of unknown primary is submitted to pathological tests and diagnostic imaging in search of its origin or clues to help presume it. Having an experienced medical staff, including skilled pathologists, often leads to the successful identification of the primary lesion.
Even with extensive tests and examinations, the primary lesion may sometimes remain unknown. In such cases, the condition is managed as a "cancer of unknown primary," and we provide specialized treatment—primarily with anti-cancer drugs—at this division. A physician experienced in managing numerous cases of unknown primaries will carefully evaluate the patient’s overall condition before recommending the best possible cancer treatment. While treatment most often involves anti-cancer drugs, some cases may require surgical intervention.
While the number of hospitals accepting cancer of unknown primary in Shizuoka Prefecture is growing, it remains limited. Therefore, we aim to continue actively contributing to oncology and cancer medicine within this region.
