Features of Dermatology

Skin is an organ which covers the entire exterior of a human body, just like an eggshell covering a whole egg. It has many important functions, not limited to a role as an outer envelope protecting the inside. For example, the skin functions as an organ for metabolism, body temperature control and perceptions (senses of warmth, pain and touch). It is quite sensitive and is often affected first by diseases and cancers originated in other organs, and is sometimes affected even by the treatments for such disorders. That’s why it is crucial to maintain the skin healthy all the time and to let it function at its best, where favorable outcomes are expected for any disease and cancer treatments. It can be said that a healthy mind in a healthy body comes from a healthy skin. We all have to care our skins and value their good health. Symptoms of skin diseases and cancers, or any skin disorders arising as side effects from cancer therapies, can be prevented or improved by employing appropriate treatments and cares. Please feel free to come to the Division of Dermatology if you have any problems in the skin.

Features and Therapeutic Strategies of the Division at the SCC

The Division of Dermatology at the SCC is featured by the following two.

1. Diagnoses and therapies for skin cancers provided here are quite professional and progressive.

2. Any skin disorders through the courses of cancer treatments, not limited to skin cancers (e.g., skin disorders caused by chemotherapy, surgery or radiation therapy), are all taken care of at this division.

For the former, very professional diagnoses are provided by taking advantages of cutting-edge medical technologies including dermoscopy, lymph-node navigation system, PET-CT and special ultrasonography. They also make it possible to provide very advanced therapies, which can hardly be found in any other medical institutions, including very special surgical procedure, proton beam therapy and chemotherapy with newly-developed anti-cancer drugs (incl. clinical trials for adaptable cases). In addition, personalized (or tailored) therapy customized to suit each patient’s condition and personal wishes are provided in addition to the standard therapies.
The latter refers to the multidisciplinary team medicine, which is the biggest feature of the SCC. The Division of Dermatology leads the team supporting all the patients not limited to those with skin cancers. For example, when they have skin and nail disorders or hair loss associated with anti-cancer drug treatments, it is the Division of Dermatology that takes care of them from the beginning regardless of primary clinical divisions responsible for them. At the same time, the Division of Dermatology provides a periodical workshop for improving awareness on skin care among the multidisciplinary team. Furthermore, the Division collaborates with the Shizuoka Cancer Center Research Institute to develop a new diagnostic device for skin cancer.
Other than the above, decubitus ulcer and skin disorders caused by radiation therapy are also taken care of at the Division. Whatever the problem is, it is our biggest priority and the main therapeutic strategy to stay versatile in making therapeutic plans for each patient, and not to give up the goals by supporting them thoroughly.
