Features of Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology (IVR) is also called “image-guided therapy,” referring to procedure and therapy provided while monitoring images created by X-ray, CT or ultrasonography. “Radiofrequency ablation” (RFA) for hepatic cancer and “transcatheter liver arterial chemoembolization” (TACE) are typical IVR procedures provided here. IVR also covers diagnostic angiography, image-guided biopsy for sampling a tumor located deep in the organ, as well as other image-guided procedures including percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage (PTCD), percutaneous abscess drainage, gastrostomy, percutaneous gastrostomy and esophagostomy, and percutaneous transhepatic portal vein embolization (PTPE). In addition, the Division handles such urgent procedures as transcatheter urgent hemostasis for stopping tumor hemorrhage or postoperative hemorrhage, and percutaneous urgent drainage for postoperative abscess.

Features and Therapeutic Strategies of the Division at the SCC

The top-level expertise is practiced for performing radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) for liver cancers.

“Radiofrequency ablation” (RFA) and “transcatheter liver arterial chemoembolization” (TACE) for hepatocellular cancers are typical IVR procedures provided as cancer treatments at the Division. Needless to say, radiologists with considerable expertise perform high-leveled and very safe procedures here, but it should also be noted that we take care of our patients consistently from when they come here as outpatients to when they are admitted to the SCC hospital. We also provide systemic chemotherapy for hepatocellular cancers.

The high-spec models of CT exclusively designed for IVR have been installed.

It is essential for safe and precise performance of the IVR procedures to be equipped with imaging equipment which can produce very distinct and accurate images. At the SCC, we are geared up with two high-spec angiographic suites; one with a 320-rowed area detector CT combined with angiographic system, and the other with a flat panel detector mounted with cone beam CT designed exclusively for angiography.

We contribute to developments of new cancer therapies by participating in clinical trials.

We have been participating in various clinical trials for IVR. Especially for hepatocellular cancer treatment, we have been taking a leadership role in the trials and contributing to the development and advancement of a new cancer therapy.

A Word from the Division Staff

At the Division of Interventional Radiology, we perform examinations and procedures requested by other clinical departments. Even for a request which might involve some technical difficulties, the doctors and the technicians as well as the medical staff at other clinical departments discuss thoroughly in search for the best solution for the patient.
