Features of Neurosurgery

Brain is a highly differentiated and developed organ, and it plays a crucial role in maintaining not only life itself but various human activities including locomotion, emotion and intellection. The Division of Neurosurgery specializes in diseases in brain and skull, both of which have very complicated functions. Any diseases occurring inside skulls of cancer patients, which include such malignant brain tumors as glioma and malignant lymphoma, and such benign tumors as meningioma, neurilemmoma, and pituitary adenoma, are diagnosed and treated here. Also, brain metastases of cancers from other organs, and cerebral strokes including brain hemorrhage, brain infarct and subarachnoid hemorrhage which occur as complications, as well as head trauma, are all taken care of at this division.

Features and Therapeutic Strategies of the Division at the SCC

Treatment is customized for each patient.

Treatments for brain tumors include operation (surgical treatment), chemotherapy with anti-cancer drugs, and radiation therapy. The therapeutic strategies are decided very carefully but swiftly after studying the latest examination results for the types, locations, sizes, and association with surrounding tissues of the tumors. We apply our ample experiences in the diseases in brain and skull to provide each patient with a customized treatment plan.

Multidisciplinary team approach is being practiced.

When it comes to decision making on diagnosis and therapeutic strategy, it is essential and crucial to obtain opinions from other specialists than neurosurgeons, as symptoms of cerebral and neural system disorders involve complicacies in general conditions. Therefore, multiple coordination and cooperation with the Divisions of Radiation Oncology, Proton Therapy, Head and Neck Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Stem Cell Transplantation, Pediatrics, Diagnostic Radiology and Pathology, as well as other medical staff including nurses, pharmacists, social workers and laboratory technicians, are highly promoted and practiced in order to provide the best possible diagnoses and treatments at this division.

Minimally invasive operations are performed in pursuit of minimal damages to brains.

Operations on brain tumors need to be done extremely carefully in order not to harm on any important brain functions, while the tumors must be completely resected. At this division, experienced medical staff perform safe and secure operations using such cutting-edge devices as operative microscope and navigation system, ultrasonic aspirator and neuro-endoscopy, aiming for the least possibilities of complications. In addition, a CT modality has been installed in the operation suite since January, 2019, which contributes highly to improving safety and certainty of a surgery.

The most-advanced treatment methods are being adopted.

While standardized treatment methods are always focused on, we participate in clinical studies in collaboration with other divisions in the SCC as well as other medical institutions, pursuing some more effective cancer treatments than ever. For example, we published an article in English on the research results for “Tumor-specific Immunotherapy for Malignant Glioma Utilizing Activated Dendritic Cells,“ which was developed in collaboration with the Department of Immunotherapy Studies, the Shizuoka Cancer Center Research Institute. And for malignant lymphoma derived from central nervous system, intensive chemotherapy in collaboration with the Division of Stem Cell Transplantation has made it possible to maintain the world-class treatment results. In addition, we have achieved a safe and secure surgical procedure developed on our own for benign brain tumor resection.

Leading neurosurgeons with abundant experiences attend the patients here.

The SCC is known as one of the top medical institutions with biggest numbers of cancer patients in Japan, in both fields of medical and surgical procedures. Consultations for deciding therapeutic plans about all the cases of brain metastases at the SCC come to the Division of Neurosurgery. Therefore, the division has experienced one of the biggest numbers of brain metastases of cancer in Japan, which has given it a leading position having hosted a national “brain metastasis workshop.”

We contribute to the community healthcare.

We acknowledge an important role in promoting and contributing to community healthcare, and have played a leading role in the field of brain tumors with our highly-developed expertise for helping people in Shizuoka prefecture and the vicinity.

A Word from the Division Staff

What we believe as the most important task of ours is to provide each patient with a customized therapeutic plan. We always try to choose the best suitable way of treatment at the best timing based on the close observations on neurological symptoms, general conditions and social milieu for each patient, being aided by constant communications with the patient him/herself, his/her family and friends, and medical staff from other divisions.
