The Division of Pathology deals with “pathological diagnosis” using microscopic examinations on tissue and cell samples collected by clinical departments for diagnostic purposes, and biopsy specimens resected for surgical treatments. Pathological diagnosis is the most reliable examination to determine whether the tumor is benign or malignant. The results are reported to the clinicians, who will use them for their therapeutic plans.
Pathological diagnoses are all made by pathologists, the specialists of pathology, who have highly-qualified skills and ample experiences. Furthermore, the pathologists here have their own specialties in specific organs, so that the ever-more-accurate diagnoses are guaranteed.
At all the clinical departments where cancer therapies are being provided, new therapies are constantly brought into practice. In order to get the most efficacy from those new therapies, the diagnostic technology should also be constantly updated. We are always willing to participate in various clinical tests regarding new diagnostic technologies, and at the same time, we willingly adopt the “companion diagnostics” to assess the reactive property of a patient against a therapeutic drug prior to the clinical application of it.
At the SCC, a clinical study named the “Project HOPE (High-tech Omics-based Patient Evaluation)” is currently moving forward. The study is about analyzing genetic information of tumor tissues, aiming at the practice of “personalized medicine,” which is to customize medicine for each patient, and “Mibyo (a Japanese word meaning presymptomatic) medicine” to prevent the manifestation of a disease while it is still in the preclinical stage. The Division of Pathology support the study by supplying tumor tissues for analyses, and at the same time, we are working on adaptation of the analysis results to the pathological diagnoses here.
Since 2011, we have been organizing the Shizuoka Cancer Center Special Seminar for Pathologists’ Training. Expert pathologists specializing in different tumors offer the latest information on how to make an accurate pathological diagnosis of a cancer.
Although we don’t see patients in person, we do see them via microscopes. We support them thoroughly by providing them with accurate diagnoses, which will lead them to optimal cancer treatments.
