In general, a cancer originates in some organ, and spreads to other organs as it progresses. Even when it metastasizes, it is considered that it takes on the characteristics of the primary tumor and the treatment method will be tailored in accordance with it. However, there is a case sometimes that only the metastasized tumor is detected at the time of diagnosis, and even with various examinations, the primary tumor may remain unknown. In a case as such, it is called “cancer of unknown primary” and the Division of Clinical Oncology will be responsible for the treatment of that type of cancer.
Cancer of unknown primary is brought to pathological tests and diagnostic imaging in search for where it has originated or in presuming it. Experienced medical staff including pathologists often leads to the identification of the primary lesion.
Even with various tests and examinations, primary lesion might remain unknown sometimes. The case will be handled as “a cancer with unknown primary,” and we provide the treatment (mostly with anti-cancer drugs) at this division. The doctor having experienced many cases of unknown primaries will carefully examine how the patient’s general condition is before suggesting the best possible cancer treatment. In most cases, it will involve anti-cancer drugs, but there can be a case requiring a surgical treatment (operation).
There have been more and more hospitals accepting cancers with unknown primaries in Shizuoka prefecture, but the number of those hospitals is still quite small. We hope to be able to contribute to cancer medicine in this region.
