Shizuoka Cancer Center Launches on Online Application for Medical Information Disclosure (March, 2025)

As medical information is critical personal information of a patient, he/she can request a disclosure of it based on the “Principal for Providing Medical Information“ as well as the “Act on the Protection of Personal Information” enforced by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan. The revised 2020-edition of the “Act on the Protection of Personal Information” offers the ongoing improvement for extending individual rights to protect them and personal interests, along with the consideration on usefulness of exploiting personal information. Based on this directional movement, the Shizuoka Cancer Center reviewed the method to request for medical information disclosure which would be easy for patients coming afar, or having difficulty in moving due to the disease or the disability, and determined on adopting the online a system for requested application for medical information disclosure. The SCC has taken the initiative in adopting this method for online application for disclosure in Japan, which has been realized by the rigidification of identity confirmation through a widespread use of “My Number Card” and improved security control technologies. Now that the online request for medical information disclosure has been made possible, patients can receive it by postal mail in additional to conventional way to receive it at the hospital window.
