Our Policies for Clinical Ethics

July 18, 2023

Ethical issues in a medical institution are divided broadly into “clinical ethics” and “research ethics.” “Our Policies for Clinical Ethics” shown below have been composed for the purposes of protecting the patient’s rights and providing the best medicine. Intractable issues of clinical ethics not clarified even in the light of the policies will be thoroughly discussed at the relevant conferences including the Review Committee for Clinical Ethics consisting of multidisciplinary members. As for the “research ethics,” the issues will be deliberated at three institutional review boards (IRB) (i.e., IRB for Clinical Researches, IRB for Sponsor-Initiated Clinical Trials, IRB for Exploratory Researches).

  1. We respect the patient’s personality and philosophy, and protect his/her human dignity.
  2. We value the patient’s interests and provide him/her with the best medicine which is fair without any discriminations.
  3. We provide the patient with sufficient information through a thorough explanation, and respect his/her right of self-determination. When the patient has a difficulty in making self-determination, the staff will provide the necessary assistance.
  4. We value the patient’s privacy, protect his/her personal information, and maintain confidentiality.

At the Shizuoka Cancer Center, we have following other guidelines, policy, regulations, and manuals for making the above-mentioned Policies for Clinical Ethics work.
